OVERVIEW
What she is
Mara is a fast, athletic young female with an open, social temperament and strong engagement. Speed is her first language. She is environmentally confident, naturally curious, able to think while she's moving, and quick to commit once she understands the job.
Mara was the female initially selected to be retained from our World of Warcraft (WoW) litter and held back within our program for continued evaluation. Her early development showed the balance of confidence, intelligence, athleticism, versatility, and handler engagement we look for in a true utility dog.
As she matured, Mara made it clear that her future belonged here with us. She is currently being trained as an Executive Function Service Dog for her primary job. Her developing work includes handler check-ins, routine prompting, object location, object retrieval, environmental awareness, and practical daily assistance.
Mara approaches life as if every assignment has just been marked high priority. Whether she is launching off a dock, tracking a disc, searching for hidden objects, retrieving a dropped item, or helping with everyday routines, she brings the same speed, focus, and complete commitment to the job.
She is also being developed in disc because she is a natural visual tracker with excellent body awareness, speed, and enthusiasm for movement. Because she is a mermaid who loves water, we are also working on Dock Diving and Nose Work.
Mara is the definition of a utility dog. She transitions easily between environments and activities without losing her enthusiasm or focus. She does not simply enjoy having a job. She expects one. If something around the house needs doing, Mara is usually volunteering before anyone has finished asking.
Somewhere between Executive Function Service Dog, dock-diving enthusiast, professional retriever, and self-appointed Director of Household Operations, Mara quietly made the decision that she was not going anywhere. We agreed.
Mara is no longer available for public placement consideration. She is versatile, funny, joyful, and deeply loved, and she has won a long-term place in our hearts and home.

- Food Motivation: Excellent. Food is a valuable reinforcer and makes introducing new concepts enjoyable and efficient.
- Toy Motivation: High. Play isn't a reward. It's a lifestyle.
- Retrieves: If you drop it, Mara assumes it's now an emergency.
- Object Work: Developing location and retrieval skills for practical daily assistance tasks.
- Nose: Mara approaches scent work like a problem solver. Once she commits to an odor, she works until she finds it, unconcerned by the obstacles in her way. Whether the hide is tucked beneath boards, hidden behind garden tools, buried under playground equipment, or covered with debris, Mara simply keeps working the puzzle until she reaches source. Watching her think her way through a difficult search is every bit as impressive as watching her use her nose.
- Disc: Mara is a natural visual tracker with strong body awareness and tremendous enthusiasm for flying discs. This is her favorite way to exercise. She seems absolutely certain she can fly like a squirrel, launching into acrobatic leaps and twisting through the air with complete confidence.
- Water: Mara is convinced she is part mermaid. She absolutely loves the water and has been introduced to Dock Diving, where she attacks every splash with the same enthusiasm she brings to everything else.
- Agility: Fast, agile, fearless. Mara approaches physical challenges with complete confidence. New equipment, unstable footing, uneven terrain, climbs, tunnels, and jumps are simply puzzles to solve. She is remarkably body-aware and moves with the speed and agility of a dog who is convinced gravity is merely a suggestion.
- Service Dog Training: Currently developing into an Executive Function Service Dog, where her natural initiative and problem-solving ability are becoming practical everyday assistance.
- Enthusiasm for Work: Living with Mara is never boring. She attacks life with enthusiasm, approaches every challenge as though it were the most important job in the world, and somehow manages to make everyone around her smile in the process. She's equal parts athlete, comedian, problem solver, and professional optimist, and we wouldn't change a thing.
- General Disposition: If you're having a bad day, Mara has already decided she's going to fix it. Her tail rarely stops wagging, she approaches life with infectious enthusiasm, and she has an uncanny ability to make people laugh. Whether she's proudly retrieving something you didn't know you needed, launching herself into another self-appointed mission, or simply reminding you that life is more fun than you thought it was five minutes ago, Mara has a way of making difficult days a little brighter.
- Charm: Mara may be compact, but she has enough personality to fill the room. She is cute, a little naughty, and somehow manages to get away with it every time. Even when she's convinced another household "crisis" requires an immediate response, it's almost impossible to be upset with her. She has a way of making you smile first and shake your head second.
- Current Adventures: Mara is currently being trained as an Executive Function Service Dog, a role that suits both her intelligence and her need to stay busy. When she's off the clock, she's usually convinced she's part mermaid, launching off docks into the water, chasing flying discs with complete commitment, or finding a new way to make us laugh. As far as Mara is concerned, every day should include a job, an adventure, and preferably getting wet
- Final Assessment: Some dogs become part of your breeding program. Others become part of your family. Mara quietly made that decision for us.
EXECUTIVE FUNCTION TASKS IN DEVELOPMENT
- Handler Check-Ins: Learning to initiate contact and confirm that her person is aware and responsive.
- Routine Prompting: Developing reminders for water, breaks, bedtime routines, and daily transitions.
- Object Location: Learning to search for named items such as glasses, phone, purse, keys, and water bottle.
- Object Retrieval: Building practical delivery skills for daily-use items.
- Environmental Navigation: Developing awareness of ramps, curbs, surfaces, and handler pace.
- Partnership Skills: Learning to think, communicate, persist appropriately, and stand down when released.
